"Many Women’s Aid organisations were set up around the country in the 1970’s to offer a safe place for women and children fleeing domestic violence. In London many borough based services offered safe housing at first and then grew to develop services for women and children living in the community. Many projects recognized early in their history that children and young people needed separate and specialist support so dedicated services for young survivors were established.
In 2005, Solas Anois (Irish and Traveller Women’s Domestic Violence Service) successfully joined Camden Women’s Aid and in June 2007 Solace Women’s Aid was formed following the merger of Camden, Enfield and Islington Women’s Aid. Each individual organisation had over 25 years experience of delivering domestic violence services in London and now formed a larger charity offering practical and emotional support.
In 2009 Solace Women’s Aid also started supporting women affected by sexual violence and a year later in 2010 secured a significant contract to run North London Rape Crisis delivering specialist support in 7 boroughs.
In 2011 Solace Women’s Aid merged with Lambeth Women’s Aid to add to our services south of the river and a successful merger with DVSS Barnet in 2012 gave a strong base to dedicated support services in this busy north London borough.
Our services focus on supporting women and children and now incorporate smaller capacity services for male survivors in several London boroughs. The overwhelming majority of survivors of violence are female and Solace Women’s Aid is constituted to target our services towards the greater need.
We began work in partnership with DVIP (Domestic Violence Intervention Project) in 2011 to also address the issue of the perpetrator’s violent behaviour. Through this work we are able to offer a service to violent men to stop their abuse and a parallel service to women prioritising their safety and recovery.
Since the 1970’s each of these services is proud to have helped thousands of women, men and children to be safe and we continue to dedicate ourselves to supporting them now and in the future"
